Mastering the Art of Pruning—

Expert Tips for Fruit Trees & Roses

If you were unable to attend our recent classes on pruning, fret not! We've got some wonderful information for you regarding pruning as we enter into the fall season. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, these tips will help you make the most of this important seasonal task.

Pruning isn’t just about keeping your plants looking neat — it’s essential for their health and vitality. By removing dead, damaged, or overgrown branches, you allow your plants to focus their energy on producing strong new growth. Plus, proper pruning improves air circulation, helping prevent fungal diseases and keeping your garden thriving.

Local Tip: While pruning is often done in the fall in warmer regions, here in North Idaho it’s best to wait until late winter or very early spring — just before the sap starts to rise. This timing ensures cuts heal naturally and your plants bounce back beautifully.

Pruning fruit trees and roses is a vital practice for any gardener, whether large or small. It not only shapes the tree, but enhances its health and productivity, resulting in higher-quality yields year after year. In this ROSE VIDEO, New Leaf co-owner, Elaine gives a quick tutorial on how to trim an overgrown rose bush.

Quick Tips on Rose Pruning:

  • Don’t forget your thick, sturdy gloves to protect yourself from thorns!

  • Elaine’s pruning may seem extreme, but roses respond very well to aggressive pruning. With fewer canes and stems, they can focus more energy into growing new canes and beautiful flowers.

  • If you stumble across a frog while clearing away leaves, all it needs is another damp pile of leaves to call home.

Story Time in the Garden —

Featuring a Live Butterfly Release!

There’s something magical about seeing little ones light up while learning in the garden — and this month’s Story Time in the Garden is sure to be unforgettable!

Designed for children ages 4-10, this special event includes story time under the trees led by Katie from Hayden Community Library. After the stories, kids can enjoy a light snack and receive a garden-themed gift courtesy of New Leaf Nursery.

What makes this Story Time extra special?
We’ll be joined by Susan Burke of Wings Rising, a local nonprofit working to protect and grow the monarch butterfly population in North Idaho. Susan will share fun and educational facts about these beloved pollinators — and then we’ll gather together to witness a live monarch butterfly release right here in the garden!

Susan will also have small milkweed plants available for purchase at the nursery after the release—these are a favorite of monarch butterflies. Just imagine welcoming these stunning pollinators into your own garden!

This heartwarming experience is FREE to attend, and we’d love for you to bring friends and family along. Plus, as a thank-you to our Lil’ Sprouts Garden Club, each child will receive a limited-edition Monarch sticker to take home.

Summer Nights at New Leaf

Sip, Shop & Culture—

Summer Nights at New Leaf

Join us for one—or all—of our four summer gatherings at our Sip, Shop & Culture community events! Nothing beats a magical summer evening at New Leaf Nursery, where nature meets art. Wander through the nursery grounds where you can admire the work of local artists, sip on delicious wine, and indulge in a charcuterie selection from local winery, Rosemary Manor.

Each of our Sip, Shop & Culture events will feature a different local band, bringing fresh energy and unique sounds to every gathering. We’re kicking off the series with the smooth, soulful rhythms of Balboa Park, a Latin jazz band that’s quickly making a name for themselves in the local music scene. Their rich, melodic grooves will fill the nursery grounds, creating an unforgettable ambiance as you stroll through garden pathways, admire local art, and sip on your favorite wine.

We’re excited to showcase a variety of local artists whose work will be featured throughout the evening, with new vendors at each event. Whether you're an art enthusiast or simply curious, this is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the makers, hear the stories behind their work, and maybe even find a new favorite piece to take home.

Get a sneak peek below at a few of the talented artists featured at our first event—you’ll find these creators, along with many more, throughout our series of Sip, Shop & Culture events!

Coeur d'Alene artist Cory Bomar crafts high-quality jewelry using fine silver, each piece thoughtfully designed. Her work goes beyond beauty—a portion of every sale goes toward supporting bumble bee conservation, blending her love for art and nature in the most meaningful way. When you wear one of her pieces, you're not just supporting a local artist—you’re also helping protect an important piece of our ecosystem!

Based out of Coeur d’Alene, Brooke Baggett uses the ever changing landscapes and beauty of nature as her inspiration. Her desire for creative expression has led her to become a self-taught artist. She finds deep satisfaction in painting—challenging herself technically and exploring multiple styles, mediums, and subject matters. In 2022, she was named Artist of the Year by the Coeur d’Alene Art Association.

Whether you're here to find inspiration, discover one-of-a-kind pieces, or simply unwind with a glass of wine, we welcome you to join us. It's the perfect opportunity to support our local artisan community and mingle with fellow art lovers.

Can’t make it to our first event? No worries! We’ve got three more lined up this summer. Check the dates below for all the details.

Beat the Heat—

Top Plants That Thrive in North Idaho

July in North Idaho often brings warm, sunny days with dry spells that can challenge even the most dedicated gardeners. But don’t worry — there are plenty of beautiful and productive plants that thrive in these conditions! If you want a low-maintenance garden that stays vibrant through the summer heat, here are some heat-tolerant plants perfect for North Idaho gardens:

CONEFLOWER (ECHINACEA)

These sturdy perennials are heat and drought tolerant, plus they attract butterflies and birds. They’re great for cut flowers or naturalized garden areas.

LAVENDER

Loves full sun and well-drained soil, lavender not only smells amazing but also attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies. It’s drought-tolerant and perfect for rock gardens or borders.

DAYLILIES (HEMEROCALLIS)

These tough perennials bloom profusely in July and August and can tolerate full sun and dry soil once established. Their vibrant colors add a splash of brightness to any garden bed.

BLANKET FLOWER (GAILLARDIA)

With striking red and yellow flowers that last all summer, this hardy native wildflower is perfect for full sun, dry conditions, and lean soils.

Vegetables & Herbs That Can Take the Heat

TOMATOES

Choose heat-tolerant tomato varieties like ‘Heatmaster’ or ‘Solar Fire.’ These reliable performers are specially bred to thrive in warmer climates—making them a smart pick for North Idaho’s hot summer days.

PEPPERS

Peppers thrive in the heat of July, soaking up the warm sun to fuel their growth. Keep them happy with consistent watering, but be careful not to overdo it—soggy soil can lead to root problems. Aim for moist, well-draining soil to keep those sweet and spicy harvests coming!

BASIL

Basil loves the heat and sunshine—just like your tomatoes! This fragrant herb is the perfect summer companion, enhancing garden beds and bringing fresh, bold flavor to your seasonal meals

ZUCCHINI & SUMMER SQUASH

These vigorous growers thrive in the summer heat and reward you with a steady, bountiful harvest all through July and August—perfect for gardeners looking to make the most of the season!

Let us not forget about nature's unsung heroes—shade-tolerant plants, which quietly thrive in the cool, dappled light of shaded garden spots where other plants may struggle. These resilient species have adapted to lower light levels, showcasing a diverse range of colors, textures, and shapes that bring life and elegance to darker corners of your garden. From ferns with their lacy fronds to hostas with their lush foliage, shade-tolerant plants offer a lot of possibilities for creating an inviting and tranquil garden in areas where sunlight is limited.

By embracing shade-tolerant plants, you can elevate the beauty of your garden while creating lush, verdant havens that allow you to revel in the tranquility of these cool, leafy sanctuaries.
