Mastering the Art of Pruning—
Expert Tips for Fruit Trees & Roses
If you were unable to attend our recent classes on pruning, fret not! We've got some wonderful information for you regarding pruning as we enter into the fall season. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, these tips will help you make the most of this important seasonal task.
Pruning isn’t just about keeping your plants looking neat — it’s essential for their health and vitality. By removing dead, damaged, or overgrown branches, you allow your plants to focus their energy on producing strong new growth. Plus, proper pruning improves air circulation, helping prevent fungal diseases and keeping your garden thriving.
Local Tip: While pruning is often done in the fall in warmer regions, here in North Idaho it’s best to wait until late winter or very early spring — just before the sap starts to rise. This timing ensures cuts heal naturally and your plants bounce back beautifully.
Pruning fruit trees and roses is a vital practice for any gardener, whether large or small. It not only shapes the tree, but enhances its health and productivity, resulting in higher-quality yields year after year. In this ROSE VIDEO, New Leaf co-owner, Elaine gives a quick tutorial on how to trim an overgrown rose bush.
Quick Tips on Rose Pruning:
Don’t forget your thick, sturdy gloves to protect yourself from thorns!
Elaine’s pruning may seem extreme, but roses respond very well to aggressive pruning. With fewer canes and stems, they can focus more energy into growing new canes and beautiful flowers.
If you stumble across a frog while clearing away leaves, all it needs is another damp pile of leaves to call home.
