The holidays are here!

The nursery has been buzzing the past several weeks, and if you’ve been by, you’ve seen all the beautiful décor, and stunning Christmas trees we have this year! The scent of fresh cut trees is unrivaled, and just walk through one of the greenhouses brimming with trees and you’ll see what I mean.

If you were lucky, you saw a stunning 20ft tree aglow with thousands of white twinkle lights as you drove down Government Way. We were lighting this beautiful tree for a very special destination! That stunning tree now stands proudly in the lobby of the historic Davenport Hotel in Spokane. In addition to the lobby tree, all the trees for the annual Christmas Tree Elegance held at the Davenport are from New Leaf Nursery. The event benefits the Spokane Symphony and runs through December 12. It’s a wonderful way to ring in the holidays! We also delivered 54 trees to the hotel and their related properties.

Winter Nights at New Leaf Nursery

We brought the first of the season holiday cheer to all that attended both of their Winter Nights’ events. We stayed open late, donned our red and white stripe scarves, and braved the elements (rain on the first weekend, snow on the second), to give our loyal friends and customers plenty of time to shop for their perfect tree, enjoy some hot chocolate, amazing Winter Brew from our friends at Lone Mountain Farms, and enjoy Christmas carols from The Vine Church in Hayden.

Somehow Ben managed to get that fire pit roaring, even in the pouring rain, so everyone could enjoy a s’more! Last Saturday, as the choir sang Silent Night, giant snowflakes fell! The perfect pairing of elements to put holiday spirit into your heart! A huge thank you to everyone on our team who worked long hours to make these events a resounding success!

Four Seasons Tree

Our own Four Seasons Tree is still on display inside the garden center, so come by and see how we interpreted the four seasons on one tree! It’s very unusual, and definitely worth a stop by to see it. As we were decorating it, the team all had their favorite season. The author liked fall the best. Let us know which one is your favorite!

And speaking of fresh wreaths, we have truly the most talented team of wreath makers ever! Whether you choose one of mixed traditional cedar and pine, or one with some unusual materials added to the traditional mix, your front door will be the envy of the neighborhood! We have them starting at $39.99 and we have some pretty cool artificial wreaths, if you prefer something permanent.

We still have a great selection of fresh cut trees, as well as living trees. Swing by soon to get one for yourself, your office, your church, or a friend. We are back to our normal hours, but the hot chocolate will be flowing, and the choir from St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Post Falls will join us and sing all our favorite carols! Plan to come by both December 11 and December 18 to hear them from 4:00pm - 6:00 pm.

2021 in the rear view…

This was a great year at the nursery! We had a great selection of annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, veg and roses! We are always looking for the newest varieties to bring to gardens in our neighborhood. We expanded our selection of garden containers, soils, and the home goods and gifts in the garden center were unique and beautiful.

We introduced classes to broaden our community involvement, and provide education along with some good old fashion fun! If you have a request or suggestion for a class, we are putting our 2022 calendar together now. Give us a call or send us an email through our website with your requests. We also expanded our social media offerings to provide you with up-to-the-minute news inside the nursery. The website is up and running, filled with useful information. The newsletter comes out twice a month, and in it, we hope to give you a quick summary of all that has happened, and is going to happen in the coming months.

We also started our Seed Rewards Program, and many of you have seen quick rewards! Sign-up on the website if you haven’t already done so, and every time you come in, let the cashier know you are a member, and rack up those rewards. One lady was jumping for joy when she realized she had earned $100 in rewards! You can be the next one! Sign-up online to become part of our rewards program!

And do you know why we kiss under mistletoe?

According to Norse culture, the mistletoe plant was a sign of love and peace. The story goes that the goddess Figg lost her son, the god Baldur, to an arrow made of mistletoe. After his death, she vowed that mistletoe would kiss anyone who passed beneath so long as it was never again used as a weapon.

Have a wonderful holiday season! From all your friends at New Leaf Nursery Hayden!

It's a wrap! Well, almost…

The nursery is a busy place, nearly every season of the year! We’re busy putting the flowers and plants to bed for the winter as we know you have been doing at YOUR homes, too! The team is raking pine needles to create a natural mulch for the plants and trees. Pine needles are light and fluffy, so spreading them around is pretty easy, and they don't compact much as they decompose, so you don't have to worry about them becoming too thick or forming a rain-impervious mat. Even better, they're free for the raking.

And if you have pine needles, you also most likely have pine cones! The smaller ones can be placed in bulk around trees and plants to act as mulch. They will do a great job at keeping the plants’ roots protected while helping hold in moisture. And, as the pine cones decay over months or years, they provide ongoing organic fertilizer to the perennial plant roots. Pine cones provide aesthetic benefits in your landscaped areas as well. Be creative and use them as a border, or atop other natural materials to create visually interesting vignettes to enjoy in your gardens!

And, even now…

With old man winter closing in, we, the gardeners, are thinking of spring, and the overwhelming joy that season brings! The world awakes anew…with the first ‘snowdrops’ popping through the still frozen ground, the fragrance of the hyacinth wafting thru the chilly air, and the hellebores showing off their magnificent blooms and leaves at the base of your mailbox for your favorite letter carrier to enjoy! We’ve all heard the phrase “to plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow!” So, If you’re looking for the perfect holiday gift for the ‘soil lovers’ on your list, don’t forget that New Leaf Nursery has gift certificates available for purchase online and in the garden center!

And, we are putting together the ‘wish list’ for 2022 Spring…if you missed something this year and want it next year, let us know and we’ll do our best to get it for you. Send us an email, or give us a call, and we’ll be happy to call you in the spring when it arrives!

Have you met the cutest gnome of them all?

This week the spotlight shines on Amber from our team! She is a ‘take charge’ type of person who happens to be a lover of gnomes. Along with being one of the smiling faces you will meet when you visit the garden center, she is also the one who creates all the beautiful displays inside the barn, and is, without question, one of the nicest people (feistiest I should say), you will ever meet. You’ll love her too, so next time you come by, be sure to say hello to Amber!

Looking forward to seeing you all on November 27!

And before we say goodbye…

241413140_4662025733828683_7673004924583525248_n.jpg

Over this past weekend, we held a contest on social media to guess the weight of this bad boy (the pumpkin, not the other bad boy)…well, if you can believe it, after countless guesses, two local ladies guessed within 8 ounces of each other. The pumpkin was 114.67 lbs in actual weight, and one guessed 114 lbs and the other, 114.5 lbs. Being the good guy he is, Ben decided to award a winning gift certificate to both lucky ladies. The closest winner donated the pumpkin to the Children’s Village!

Mr. Giant Pumpkin at the Children’s Village!
