The nursery is a busy place, nearly every season of the year! We’re busy putting the flowers and plants to bed for the winter as we know you have been doing at YOUR homes, too! The team is raking pine needles to create a natural mulch for the plants and trees. Pine needles are light and fluffy, so spreading them around is pretty easy, and they don't compact much as they decompose, so you don't have to worry about them becoming too thick or forming a rain-impervious mat. Even better, they're free for the raking.
And if you have pine needles, you also most likely have pine cones! The smaller ones can be placed in bulk around trees and plants to act as mulch. They will do a great job at keeping the plants’ roots protected while helping hold in moisture. And, as the pine cones decay over months or years, they provide ongoing organic fertilizer to the perennial plant roots. Pine cones provide aesthetic benefits in your landscaped areas as well. Be creative and use them as a border, or atop other natural materials to create visually interesting vignettes to enjoy in your gardens!
And, even now…
With old man winter closing in, we, the gardeners, are thinking of spring, and the overwhelming joy that season brings! The world awakes anew…with the first ‘snowdrops’ popping through the still frozen ground, the fragrance of the hyacinth wafting thru the chilly air, and the hellebores showing off their magnificent blooms and leaves at the base of your mailbox for your favorite letter carrier to enjoy! We’ve all heard the phrase “to plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow!” So, If you’re looking for the perfect holiday gift for the ‘soil lovers’ on your list, don’t forget that New Leaf Nursery has gift certificates available for purchase online and in the garden center!
And, we are putting together the ‘wish list’ for 2022 Spring…if you missed something this year and want it next year, let us know and we’ll do our best to get it for you. Send us an email, or give us a call, and we’ll be happy to call you in the spring when it arrives!

This past Wednesday…
We held a holiday wreath class with guest designer Petra VanBaar, showing us how to decorate our mantels at home, as well as how to create a beautiful, simple and classic Christmas wreath for our doors! Another great group of people attended the class!
Since we are on the subject of classes, we have one more before the season ends, and it’s next Tuesday, November 16, with our landscape designer, Cassie Hardy.
Have a say!
We are currently building our schedule of events and classes for 2022, and we’d love to hear from you! This year, we hosted classes on pruning, bulb planting, garden arts including stepping stones, wreaths for the holidays, and seasonal gardening…what else would you like to learn more about? Let us know!
Have you met the cutest gnome of them all?
This week the spotlight shines on Amber from our team! She is a ‘take charge’ type of person who happens to be a lover of gnomes. Along with being one of the smiling faces you will meet when you visit the garden center, she is also the one who creates all the beautiful displays inside the barn, and is, without question, one of the nicest people (feistiest I should say), you will ever meet. You’ll love her too, so next time you come by, be sure to say hello to Amber!
