Your Garden in September

Still Growing Strong—Your Garden in September

By Kathy Wright i New Leaf Nursery

This time of year, everyone says the same thing: “I can’t believe it’s September!” We’re saying it too. And while we’re looking forward to cooler days and crisp evenings—sitting outside on our decks and porches, enjoying the last glimmers of summer— our gardens are still calling our names.

September is the month to take advantage of these final warm weeks and plant your Brassicas. Don’t feel bad if you’re not sure what a Brassica is! They’re a group of plants known for their diverse, edible parts—leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds. This plant family includes a wide range of vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, turnips, rutabaga, cauliflower, and Brussel sprouts.

You can grow them from starts found at your local garden center. At New Leaf, our outstanding team can help you select the right plants and advise you on the best growing conditions. Here are a few tips from our experts:

  • Brassicas like cool, temperate climates. By this time of year, our 90-degree days are usually behind us, making way for cooler temps.

  • They prefer well-drained soil that’s rich in organic matter.

  • Brassicas are susceptible to pests and diseases, so preventive measures are essential.

September is a transitional time in our North Idaho gardens. With the first frost approaching, here’s a list of timely garden projects:

  • Plant spring bulbs: As a general rule, plant bulbs from September to November. Spring favorites like daffodils, tulips, crocus, and hyacinth begin rooting in warm soil before winter sets in.

  • Plant garlic and shallots: These can go in the ground now for overwintering and summer harvesting.

  • Plant new trees, shrubs, and perennials: Fall is an ideal time to plant! The cooler weather helps plants establish strong root systems before winter.

  • Mulch deciduous trees and shrubs, especially fruit-bearing ones, after the first hard frost.

  • Apply phosphorous fertilizer to everything that blooms or fruits.

  • Spread compost in your vegetable beds.

  • Spray deciduous trees with horticultural (dormant or all-season) oil after leaf drop.

And don’t forget about your flower pots that may be starting to fade. Brightly colored mums, pansies, kale, and ornamental grasses can refresh your containers for the season. Adding the right tones of autumn to your front door or deck with cheerful flower pots is a lovely way to welcome guests.

Fall is in the Air

New Fall Arrivals Are Here—

GOURD-GEOUS Pumpkins & Mums

While the forecast continues to hang onto the last gasp of summer, our evenings are starting to take on the cozy spirit of the season. Have you been to the nursery lately? Our newest fall arrivals have just landed, and they’re everything your autumn dreams are made of. We’re FALLing hard for this season’s stunning blooms and festive finds.

Summer color may be fading, but your garden’s show is far from over. Our fresh selection of colorful mums and asters are proof that beauty lasts well beyond the warm months. These low-maintenance garden favorites thrive in containers and add a vibrant splash of color to porches, patios, and garden beds all the way until the first frost—perfect for greeting fall visitors to your home for Thanksgiving.

And of course — it’s not fall without pumpkins! That’s right—pumpkins of every shape, color, and size have arrived at New Leaf. Use them to accent your plantings, decorate your doorstep, or create a festive fall display that’s picture-perfect.

Stop by this weekend to explore all the new arrivals and stock up on everything you need to celebrate fall in style!

Mastering the Art of Pruning—

Expert Tips for Fruit Trees & Roses

If you were unable to attend our recent classes on pruning, fret not! We've got some wonderful information for you regarding pruning as we enter into the fall season. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, these tips will help you make the most of this important seasonal task.

Pruning isn’t just about keeping your plants looking neat — it’s essential for their health and vitality. By removing dead, damaged, or overgrown branches, you allow your plants to focus their energy on producing strong new growth. Plus, proper pruning improves air circulation, helping prevent fungal diseases and keeping your garden thriving.

Local Tip: While pruning is often done in the fall in warmer regions, here in North Idaho it’s best to wait until late winter or very early spring — just before the sap starts to rise. This timing ensures cuts heal naturally and your plants bounce back beautifully.

Pruning fruit trees and roses is a vital practice for any gardener, whether large or small. It not only shapes the tree, but enhances its health and productivity, resulting in higher-quality yields year after year. In this ROSE VIDEO, New Leaf co-owner, Elaine gives a quick tutorial on how to trim an overgrown rose bush.

Quick Tips on Rose Pruning:

  • Don’t forget your thick, sturdy gloves to protect yourself from thorns!

  • Elaine’s pruning may seem extreme, but roses respond very well to aggressive pruning. With fewer canes and stems, they can focus more energy into growing new canes and beautiful flowers.

  • If you stumble across a frog while clearing away leaves, all it needs is another damp pile of leaves to call home.
