HAPPY NEW YEAR!

NEW YEAR, NEW GARDEN

It's almost a new year and that means a new gardening season is right around the corner! As every gardener knows, there is never a lack of projects to do in the garden. Each year, we reflect on the past and set intentions for the future, and this year will be no different—which means it’s time to begin thinking of resolutions and goals for 2024!

HERE ARE SOME GREAT RESOLUTIONS TO CONSIDER IN THE NEW YEAR:

1. THROW OUT OLD MATERIALS

Start your new year off right by throwing away any expired or damaged materials so that you can start the new year with some new gear.

2. TREAT YOURSELF TO A GARDENING BOOK

Treat yourself in the new year! A new gardening book can give you new techniques and methods to try. The Farmers’ Almanac and The Heirloom Gardener are great choices!

3. START SOMETHING FROM SEED

Make sure you’re taking extra care of your plant to yield something vigorous and healthy! Dry, wilted blooms are great for seeds. Consider harvesting these to have seeds come spring, or choose something new from our great selection of herb, veggie and flower seeds.

4. COMPOST YOUR KITCHEN SCRAPS

Composting is not only good for the environment, but a great money saver. Consider composting your kitchen scraps this year!

5. PLANT ONE (OR MORE) NATIVE PLANTS

A native plant is adapted to your soil and climate. They’re easy to grow and provide a habitat for birds and beneficial insects.

6. BUILD A RAISED GARDEN BED

A raised bed can be an easy and creative way to make maintenance of your garden easier!

7. GO ECO FRIENDLY & SUSTAINABLE

Rethink your water use, clear out herbicides and pesticides, and manage weeds and pests without dangerous chemicals.

8. PLANT A FLOWER FOR THE BEES

Each year, the number of bees rapidly decreases due to climate change and parasites, among other things. Bee-friendly plants like bee balm, salvia, zinnia, cosmos and sedum are perfect for your garden.

9. CREATE A BIRD FEEDER

Birds bring song and movement to the garden, plus they can keep certain pests at bay. We invite you to join our class on January 18th, where you can create your own Winter Bird Feeder Wreath.

10. SPEND MORE TIME IN YOUR GARDEN

Schedule time out in your day to spend some time in your garden. Aside from maintenance and actual planting, sometimes it’s nice to just sit and relax! Once the weather heats up, designate a spot for you to sit and enjoy the day amongst the flowers. Your garden and your blood pressure will thank you!

Planning the Perfect Garden

Winter is an excellent time to prepare and plan ahead for your spring garden. So, what exactly can you do right now to prepare for spring? This is that time of the year that we gardeners dream of all that we want to plant in the new season. Is this the year you decide to plant fruit trees? Or is this the year you plan to create your dream landscape?

Whatever your desire, check out these links below to help you plan the additions to your garden, and remember that we offer landscape design consultations that continue during the winter months. Whether you are starting from scratch, or you are wanting to refresh the styling of one certain area of your garden, we can help you solve any challenges you might have. We are full of great ideas and know exactly what plants to suggest for your specific areas! If you are interested in speaking with a designer, please contact the nursery and we will set up a time to meet with you.

Better Homes & Gardens

Have you been wanting to plant a garden, but not sure where to start? These garden designs will guide you in the right direction to creating the garden you’ve always dreamed of! You can also attend our first class of 2024, Designing Your Garden Landscape for a chance to learn how to plot your garden spaces.

House and Garden

Preparing a garden plot for planting is an important step in the process of creating a garden. A well thought out design does not have to be hard. If you plan before you plant, your landscape will beautifully endure for years to come without any costly and time-consuming alterations or additions.

We’ve got some exciting news! For the first time, we are offering classes in January. This year, we plan to host classes on pruning, bulb planting, seed starting, seasonal gardening, arts including macrame plant hangers, stepping stones, bird feeder wreaths and so much more! Make sure to keep an eye on our website, as we are continuing to add even more fun and exciting new classes for the 2024 season. We look forward to connecting with you all in the New Year!

Should you decide to join us in the evening, you will see our barn Christmas lights illuminating the season with sparkle. With each twinkle of the lights, the holiday spirit comes alive, and by the glow of the fire pit, you’ll find warmth, love, and the spirit of the season from all of us here at New Leaf!

Don’t Forget to Make A Wish!

This year we have partnered with the Make-A-Wish Idaho Foundation. Winter Gardening—An Oasis in the Midst of Snow and Ice!

Winter brings a different kind of beauty to the landscape—shades of gray and white abound. Gardeners who thrive with color will be happy to hear that when spring comes again, there are plenty of options to bring year round color to their landscape!

Holly has always been associated with winter. Some, like winterberry, lose their leaves in the fall, letting the bright red berries stand out. Plus the birds will appreciate the berries when other food is hard to come by. Fall is a good time to plant holly—keep in mind that it’s the female holly plants that produce the berries, so make sure you get the right ones.

Speaking of berries, Firethorn is a hardy perennial that’s attractive all year long. It has small clusters of white flowers in the spring, against glossy green leaves, and the yellow, orange and red berries remain through winter as food for the birds. When you’re planting Firethorn, you will want to make sure you choose the location carefully, since it does have sharp thorns.

Winter Heather, officially called Erica Carnea, is a great winter plant in the home landscape. It has little flowers from spring to fall, and thick foliage that lasts through the winter for a touch of green. When most plants are hibernating, you can always still rely on Winter Heather to bring some color to your garden, even if it’s snowing.

Witch Hazel, an unusual winter plant for both color and texture, has long been known for its fragrance and medicinal properties. The winding, twisted branches add a pleasant touch to winter landscapes, and it has orangish blossoms that appear in late winter and early spring, adding the perfect pop of color and interest.

Snowdrops are one of the first flowers of the new year, showing up weeks before crocuses, often poking through a layer of snow. Their milky white blooms grow from bulbs that need to be planted in the fall. Since the flowers are small, you’ll want to plant quite a few to get a dramatic effect.

Red Twig Dogwood is another winter favorite. After the leaves are gone, this plant has striking red stems and branches that really catch the eye, especially against dark evergreens or a snowy landscape. If you want garden color all year long, this winter wonder shrub is a must have.

Employee Spotlight—One of a Kind Talent!

If you have attended any of our decorating classes, then you have had the pleasure of meeting our very own resident designer, Kathy Wright. She brings the most unique and innovative ideas to New Leaf Nursery, and her most recent work can be seen in our garden center barn, where the magic of Christmas comes alive! You’ll find yourself captivated by the enchanting beauty of six Christmas trees, each one with it’s own story. The joy of the seasons are reflected in her work, and we are beyond lucky to have her as part of our New Leaf crew!

What Causes a Tree to Enter Dormancy?

Have you ever stopped to wonder what makes a tree lose its leaves in the fall and flower in the spring? Here in the Inland Northwest, a lot of trees and shrubs experience a process called dormancy. When a tree goes dormant, it’s the time in which the tree is alive, but not actively growing. It is during this time that the inner workings of a tree slow down and pause until conditions change to allow for productive growth.

Unlike evergreen tree species which can retain their foliage on account of adaptations, deciduous trees enter into dormancy to prevent the loss of water and nutrients, and to avoid the damage cold temperatures can produce. It’s important to note that dormancy helps trees—it ultimately keeps the tree alive, both in the short- and long-term. The lifespan of a tree or plant is dramatically decreased if the tree isn't allowed to go dormant for a few months. Just as bears use hibernation to survive without their usual resources in warmer months, trees use dormancy to protect themselves so they can grow again in the warmer months.

If you’re curious about the science behind the beginning stages of dormancy, you can watch this video from New Leaf Nursery Plant Specialist Jen, where she explains why leaves change color in the fall—a common side effect of the tree entering dormancy.

Fall Planting

Rain, Rain Go Away…We really want to plant today!

Fall has arrived in the Inland Northwest! Once the rain goes away, it’s time to get outside and plant! Trees, perennials and bulbs are ready to go into the ground, and local favorites such as Potentilla, Beardtongue, Day Lilies and Ornamental Grasses can still be planted and would make a wonderful addition to your fall garden. With the proper care, they will continue to flower well into the season.

If you’re already planning ahead for next year, you can give yourself a “jumpstart” by planting spring-blooming bulbs. All of our bulbs have arrived at the Nursery and are available in the barn. With over 50 different bulb varieties to choose from, you can select colors, heights, and bloom times for what to plant in fall that will work best in your garden.

Popular varieties, such as Tulips and Hyacinths need a period of cold to bloom, which is why they need to be planted in fall. Aah..we can smell the Hyacinths now! Now that the soil is cooling, it will allow the bulbs time to establish enough roots to solidly grow, but not enough to sprout before Spring. You can plant your bulbs now to ensure a colorful spring garden.

Before you grab your garden tools and gloves, make sure to swing by the Nursery to stock up on that tree or shrub you’ve been eyeing all year. Our fall sale is still happening with amazing deals up to 60% OFF!

Let’s Give ‘em Pumpkin to Talk About!

Ah, pumpkins! Nothing says fall more than a carved pumpkin on your front porch. Pumpkins are one of our favorite things about fall, and they are now being delivered regularly here at the Nursery! From Fairytale and traditional orange carvers, to warty green specialities, there are so many to choose from that you won’t be left out of the pumpkin party! Pair them with our colorful Asters and Mums, or with kale and peppers—the perfect addition to brighten your doorstep this fall season!

Fabulous Fall Recipe — Pumpkin Mac & Cheese

There are so many great things to love about the fall—gorgeous colors, sweater weather, pumpkin spiced lattes, and of course, comfort food! Fall comfort food just tastes better when the weather starts to cool off. This Pumpkin Mac and Cheese from Spoon Fork Bacon is not only to die for, but provides just the right amount comfort for those cooler nights!
