Chris Larson, Deputy Fire Marshal with Northern Lakes Fire Department will speak on the subject of Wildfire Awareness. May is National Wildfire Awareness month, dedicating the entire month of May to prevention and preparedness. Join us for a special evening of one on one interaction with Chris, as he discusses ways to be prepared for the upcoming fire season.

It’s time to proudly display those hanging porch baskets folks! In this class, each student will receive a metal hanging basket, designed for outdoor use, lined with a coir liner, soil and 5 plants to place in the basket. Additional basket styles are available for purchase at the nursery, and if additional plants are desired, they can be purchased at the nursery during the class. Every student is responsible to provide their own garden gloves. A potting station area will be provided at the nursery.

Fill your life with fresh herbs! The fragrance will enhance your summer porch, or your back terrace and you will get hooked on fresh herbs at your fingertips! Let your herbs grow, and watch your basket turn into a beautiful lush accent for the summer months. Holly will show you how to space the plants, and how to choose the right combination of textures and fragrances. She will also show you to clean the basket for use season after season.

Every student will receive a basket, soil and herbs to create a similar version of the hanging basket featured. Students should provide their own garden gloves. All other materials will be provided. Class may be held in greenhouse B, weather dependent. You will be notified by text of the location of the class on the class date if a change is made. Standing will be required to create this hanging basket. Bring your preschool and kindergarteners to the nursery to enjoy a fun time listening to stories read by Michelle, the Youth Services Librarian from Hayden Community Library! Roses are a flowering plant that will grow in the Inland Northwest, but require special care and maintenance to flourish. Brianna will discuss the best places for roses to be planted, and how best to care for them in our short growing season. She will be able to provide you with all the ways you can encourage growth, and what plants will do well in their company. Our Annual New Leaf Summer Festival makes an early return in 2024. With the extreme hot weather moving into the region over the past few years in July, it made sense to welcome Summer in on the 22nd! Our favorite local band, LakeTown Sound will again rock the house. They have a new look and a new vibe, so better bring your dancing shoes! Lots of food and drink are on tap for the event and some of your favorite vendors will also be there with their beautiful wares. The nursery will be brimming with color and great garden décor, along with beautiful summer home décor elements in the barn! Getting ready for Winter can really make a difference in the Spring!  Learning about the best and easiest way to cut back perennials, and getting them ready for winter is the topic of discussion during this class!  Laurie will also share her knowledge about the importance of fertilization in the fall months.

Laurie studied Horticulture at The Lake Washington Institute of Technology, as well as studying Environmental Horticulture, and Master Pruners Classes, at the University of Washington. Laurie has worked with trees, plants and shrubs for over 20 years, and is a respected member of the local gardening community.

Snow Valley’s garlic queen, Nina Messner, is hosting a garlic tasting at New Leaf Nursery! She will lead the class in tasting different types of garlic (there are 28 different types of garlic…who knew?), explain their culinary uses, and show you how to grow your own bulbs at home! The natural beauty of home is enhanced by the existence of stunning wildlife, like deer.  But they get hungry, and your hostas, and heck, just about everything in your garden begins to look like a buffet to them in the lean months of winter.  Learn the value of co-existing with nature in North Idaho without disrupting nature’s balance.  Laurie will discuss the best plantings to thwart the deer, and also discuss other creatures in the garden.

Add some festive flair to your Christmas Tree this year with your very own Macrame Christmas Ornaments! In this class, you will learn how to make two macrame ornaments for your Christmas tree or home decor—a whimsical gnome and a Christmas wreath. Students will need to bring their own scissors, glue gun and extra glue sticks to the class.

This stunningly simple scene is created using a pallet knife and acrylic paint on an 8x10 canvas. It will be a family treasure for years to come. Shelly will show you how to blend colors to create a nearly ethereal look, along with the techniques needed to use a pallet knife!

Want to have the most creative pumpkin centerpiece for your Halloween table? This is the class for you! Holly will show you how to paint a pumpkin, and then prep it for a fresh floral bouquet. The color palette will resemble the photo, and the flowers will create a harmonious accent to the pumpkin. During class, you will paint the pumpkin, cut the pumpkin, make the floral centerpiece, and add the pumpkin top to finish the design. All paints and floral materials will be provided.

Students will need to provide a long bladed knife to cut the pumpkin, gloves to scoop the center of the pumpkin, and a sharp shorter non serrated blade knife, such as a paring knife, or pocket knife, to cut flowers. This class will be held in our white building, and you can enter through the west facing door.

Holly will assist with teaching you how to create a long lasting holiday decoration for your porch, or this may even be used indoors.  All materials and supplies will be provided.  Each student should provide a glue gun and glue sticks, wire cutters, scissors and secateurs for cutting half inch greenery stems.  This class will be held in the white building;  you can enter through the west door. (The large brown pot shown in inspiration photo below is not included in the class pricing).
