Plant a Hanging Porch Basket

It’s time to proudly display those hanging porch baskets folks! In this class, each student will receive a metal hanging basket, designed for outdoor use, lined with a coir liner, soil and 5 plants to place in the basket. Additional basket styles are available for purchase at the nursery, and if additional plants are desired, they can be purchased at the nursery during the class. Every student is responsible to provide their own garden gloves. A potting station area will be provided at the nursery.

The location at the nursery is weather dependent. You will be texted on the day of class as to the location of the class within the nursery. (Image is shown to illustrate what the basket will look like fully grown; provided basket may vary slightly).

Hanging Herb Garden Planter in a Moss Basket

Fill your life with fresh herbs! The fragrance will enhance your summer porch, or your back terrace and you will get hooked on fresh herbs at your fingertips! Let your herbs grow, and watch your basket turn into a beautiful lush accent for the summer months. Holly will show you how to space the plants, and how to choose the right combination of textures and fragrances. She will also show you to clean the basket for use season after season.

Every student will receive a basket, soil and herbs to create a similar version of the hanging basket featured. Students should provide their own garden gloves. All other materials will be provided. Class may be held in greenhouse B, weather dependent. You will be notified by text of the location of the class on the class date if a change is made. Standing will be required to create this hanging basket. You can park near the main entry to the nursery in the lower parking lot, and then walk to greenhouse B, located in the main section of the nursery, on the left.

Memorial Day Weekend

As a way to honor the military family members who have lost a loved one in service to our country, a portion of our sales will be donated to the local VFW in CDA for scholarships. Note cards will be provided on Saturday at the nursery, and you and your family can write notes of appreciation this weekend that will be distributed at the local VFW.

The nursery is alive with color over Memorial Day weekend. The threat of a late frost has passed, and every gardener in town is planting annuals, perennials, and shrubs and trees! Come in early for the best selections!

Our Annual New Leaf Summer Festival makes an early return in 2024. With the extreme hot weather moving into the region over the past few years in July, it made sense to welcome Summer in on the 22nd! Our favorite local band, LakeTown Sound will again rock the house. They have a new look and a new vibe, so better bring your dancing shoes! Getting ready for Winter can really make a difference in the Spring!  Learning about the best and easiest way to cut back perennials, and getting them ready for winter is the topic of discussion during this class!  Laurie will also share her knowledge about the importance of fertilization in the fall months.

Laurie studied Horticulture at The Lake Washington Institute of Technology, as well as studying Environmental Horticulture, and Master Pruners Classes, at the University of Washington. Laurie has worked with trees, plants and shrubs for over 20 years, and is a respected member of the local gardening community.

Painted Pumpkins with Fall Flowers

Want to have the most creative pumpkin centerpiece for your Halloween table? This is the class for you! Holly will show you how to paint a pumpkin, and then prep it for a fresh floral bouquet. The color palette will resemble the photo, and the flowers will create a harmonious accent to the pumpkin. During class, you will paint the pumpkin, cut the pumpkin, make the floral centerpiece, and add the pumpkin top to finish the design. All paints and floral materials will be provided.

Students will need to provide a long bladed knife to cut the pumpkin, gloves to scoop the center of the pumpkin, and a sharp shorter non serrated blade knife, such as a paring knife, or pocket knife, to cut flowers. This class will be held in our white building, and you can enter through the west facing door.

EASTER EGG HUNT DETAILS

Our annual Easter Egg Hunt is intended for kids 3-12 years old. A special area for little kids 5 years and under will be designated, along with an area for 6-12 years old. We will have five Easter egg hunt times, all held every 45 minutes, and there will be a time limit; a maximum of 10 eggs is allowed per child. At the end of the egg hunt, kids will be able to turn in their eggs and receive a bag of treats! We will allow 100 kids at a time per egg hunt. If there’s a specific hunt time you want, we encourage you to arrive early. There is no guarantee that you will get that time, but the hunts are scheduled 45 minutes apart. We will have lots of fun and activities to keep the whole family entertained!

You will need to bring your own basket. Parents are encouraged to spend time with their kids during the hunting!

What plants do we love the most in the winter? Ah, yes, those that can thrive indoors! But, if the leaves are yellowing, or spots or veining is appearing, there is trouble afoot. So You Want to Grow Your Own Veg?

How many times have you thought, “I’m going to grow my own little vegetable garden,” only to be stopped by the fact that you really don’t know where to start?  We are all looking for healthy, natural food options for our families, and growing our own vegetable garden is part of the solution. Spend an hour with Laurie, and she will change your perspective on planting your veggie garden. You will learn about the different growing zones in your area, what types of seeds will thrive in your zone, and all about our growing season.

Laurie studied Horticulture at The Lake Washington Institute of Technology, as well as studying Environmental Horticulture, and Master Pruners Classes, at the University of Washington. Laurie has worked with trees, plants and shrubs for over 20 years, and is a respected member of the local gardening community.

Meet Kelly, local designer at Clove Hitch Design Co. Kelly’s work is featured daily in our garden center, and she has also shown her work in our community festivals. Kelly will teach you how to create a natural woven plant hanger to compliment your home! Kelly’s work can be seen on Instagram @clovehitchdesignco 

The class will be taught in the white building located in the center of the south end of the nursery property. Parking is on the west side of the building. Also, please note that in order to create this project, some standing will be required.

Create A Winter Bird Feeder Wreath

Come celebrate winter and create an all natural winter wreath that acts as not only a decorative accent in the winter garden, but also feeds out feathered friends during the lean times of the seasons when food is scarce. You will be provided with all materials to create the project. Please bring a glue gun, a few glue sticks, a pair of wire cutters and a pair of scissors to the class.

This class will be taught in the white building located in the center of the south end of the nursery property. You can find parking on the westside of the building.

Designing Your Garden Landscape

The success of your landscape depends on the plan! Join our newest teacher Brianna, for an opportunity to learn how to plot your garden spaces and help you understand how to select the right plants for your areas based on zone, size, and light, as well as what you can do to deter deer and other local ‘adversaries’ of the gardener. Make sure to bring a photo of the area of your yard or garden you would like to plant, and Brianna will assist you in drawing a plan.

This class is intended for the design of a designated space in your garden; due to the length of the class, full landscape designs must be scheduled with our landscape designer, Cassie through the nursery; design fees apply. The class will be taught in the white building located in the center of the south end of the nursery property.

Create a fresh holiday centerpiece of cedar, pine, magnolia, mosses, berries, and cones…using your own container, or we will supply a simple container for a low centerpiece…create a piece that is just right for your table, or countertop. The first half of the class will be designing, with assistance from the instructor, and the second half of the class will be a discussion of how to create the perfect dining table for your own holiday celebration!

Come one, come all… it’s time to celebrate the holidays at New Leaf Nursery!
